ASSESSMENT OF ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITIES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF COCHLOSPERUM VITIFOLIUM

Antimicrobial activity of an ethanolic extract was of Cochlosperum vitifolium examined against the bacterial strains, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Gardnerella vaginalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the fungal strains, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger using disc diffusion method. Antibacterial activity was determined using Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) medium and antifungal activity was studied using Potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. The extract showed significant antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value was also determined which was found to be 1 mg/ml against the selected microorganisms.
