Abstract

Irulas are a small group of indigenous forest dwellers living in different parts of India; they made their living for generations by catching and skinning snakes. Their population in one particular region is estimated to be approximately 25000. They are recognized as scheduled tribes (ST) by the government of India. Irulas are virtually cut off from the main stream of the society. They are totally ignorant about the happenings in the external world. This state of affair is the result of their illiteracy. This community leads a lot more attention from the government and the society at large. Previous studies showed the overall prevalence of 43.67% STDs in kancheepuram district. The Gummidipundiirula showed 16.19% of STDs (syphilis 4.22%). The seroprevalence of leptospirosis among primitive Negrito tribe of Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India was 20%. The aim of the present study is to estimate seroprevalence of syphilis and leptospirosis among irula tribal communities of Tamilnadu. To assess the risk factors associated with the disease in the population or community
