Abstract

A drug interaction is a situation in which a substance affects the activity of a drug, i.e. the effects are increased or decreased, or they produce a new effect. Drug interaction is defined as any modification caused by another exogenous chemical (drug, herb or food) in the diagnostic, therapeutic or other action of a drug in or on the body. Typically, interactions between drugs come to mind (drug-drug interaction). However, interactions may also exist between drugs & foods (drug-food interactions), as well as drugs & herbs (drug-herb interactions). These may occur out of accidental misuse or due to lack of knowledge about the active ingredients involved in the relevant substances. An herb-drug interaction is a situation in which the drug or the herb affects the activity of the other i.e. the effects may be increased or decreased. India has a very long, safe and continuous usage of many herbal drugs in the officially recognized alternative systems of health viz., ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha, and homeopathy. Therefore the present review focused on the issue of herb-drug interactions looms large over the practice of herbal medicine
